"Wha..What? Who is this?"
"You do realize it’s 2 am…(yawn) What’s the matter? Is everything ok?"
"Yes she’s sleeping, no, no I’m awake now. What’s going on?"
"I’m ok, yes, I’m just a little surprised, that’s all."
"Well, when I don’t hear from you in over a year."
"Right, well what’s this all about?"
"Yes…yes it’s good to hear the sound of your voice too."
"Oh…oh, now don’t start, please don’t start."
"I know you’re trying. I know you’ve tried."
"I know. I wanted the same."
"I know it’s not fair. If there was any other way, you know I would have."
"I promised her."
"You have to care! I can’t keep up with this anymore. I had to make a choice."
"Calm down, just calm down. Please. I have to talk low. I can’t wake her."
"Ok. You know I can’t help you see through this if you’re hysterical."
"How can you say that? You meant everything to me."
"No, I didn’t lock you away. I told you, it was time. We’ve been through this!"
"You’re only making it harder."
"I can’t. I just can’t. No, not even for five minutes. Do you know what five minutes would do to me? To you?"
"We’ve worked so hard to get past this. I promised her. I made a commitment to her that it would never happen again. You were there! I can’t put her through this again. It was hell when she found out. We are now just putting those pieces together. Don’t tear me apart again."
"I’m sorry….shhhh… I know. I’m sorry. I know I’ve hurt you so much too. Please, I can’t hear you cry. It’s breaking my heart."
(Sigh) "If I came, what good would it do? How would that help? I’d only hurt you more. I can’t leave her. I won’t leave her."
"No. I’m sure she’s sleeping now."
"Yes, you’re right. I’ve known you in so many ways, so much longer than I’d ever known her."
"Yes I do think about you too. Yes, daily. You don’t know what battles I have fought with myself."
"I understand. I know it’s been even harder for you."
"Ok. No. I’m up now. Right. If I gave you that, will it be enough? Will it ever be enough?"
(Sigh) "I’m only doing this because I know you need it. I know I need it to. No. No turning back."
"I’ll see you in five minutes."
In the semi-darkness of the bedroom a pair of eyes closed, a tear slipped down her cheek. She knew it was over.
