Philosophy

Title: Philosophy
Author: Ipywp
Pairing: Ryan/Colin
Rating:
Wordcount:

Almost all his life, Colin had enjoyed reading from Aristotle. He thought him a great philosopher and a wise man of his time, but he had also taken his words figuratively. As expressions rather than truths. Before he met Ryan, he hadn’t had a reason to take Aristotle’s meanings quite so literally.

Then Ryan had swept into his life, and he had found it increasingly difficult to take the words as anything but literally; it really was as if they shared the same soul in two separate bodies.

Within weeks of meeting they were more than capable of finishing the other’s sentences. They learned to speak through looks instead of words. And Colin could swear himself blind that he felt it when Ryan was in pain, or anguished in some way, no matter how many miles apart they happened to be at the time. He’d never told him so, but Colin knew Ryan would swear also to feeling the same way.

He just knew.

And then one fateful day, a number of wasted years later, an issue that had been constantly skirted and avoided like the plague was addressed. The secret, flirtatious looks sent that the other would pretend to be unable to read, a stage kiss here passed off as comedy, a lingering touch there passed off as innocent… Colin couldn’t remember who started it or why. But as they made love for the first time that night, joined in ecstasy and sharing in even the slightest of feelings, Colin fancied that they could have been the same soul in a single body. Separating them would have been near impossible.

Being on opposite sides of the continent for months, or sometimes even years, on end did nothing to hinder this the most precious of connections. They didn’t need speech to communicate, and they didn’t need a breathing, physical presence to know that the other would be there if needed.

This was the bond that stood them out amongst lovers, that made them so different to the bland couples in films and romance novels. They were not two people indulging in the passion and excitement of a relationship; they were two halves of the same soul, working in harmony, creating that excitement for themselves on an entirely new level.

They lay one night, similar to so many other nights both before and to come. As a storm quietly raged outside, Colin, on the edge of sleep and feeling the steady rise and fall of Ryan’s chest behind him, saw the truth in Aristotle’s words; this was love.
